Sometimes a linen closet can become the equivalent of a junk drawer. It’s easy to toss items haphazardly inside and shut the door. The problem is when you reopen the door, you often can’t find what you’re looking for! If that sounds like you, it’s time to get organized!
Limit What You Store
Make a decision about what you’d like to store in your linen closet and be realistic based on the size of your closet.
Some linen closets are large enough to store towels, sheets, blankets, pillows, tablecloths and bathroom essentials. Some can only house towels and bathroom paper products and maybe a few blankets if you’re lucky. Look at the size of your closet and think about what will sensibly fit inside.
If your closet is small, you could make space by putting clean bed sheets in a drawer in the bedrooms. Warm blankets can be put under the bed in a vacuum-sealed bag when they’re out of season. Bathroom necessities might be better suited in the bathroom.
Just remember these two words … Don’t overstuff!
Folding is Everything
One of the keys to a neat linen closet is having everything neatly folded (or rolled) and placed where it belongs.
- Towels: Bath towels can be folded or rolled and put away by color. Hand towels should be folded with the folded side facing forward.
- Bed Sheets: Fold sheets neatly (yes, even the fitted sheets) and store by size and set. A fun trick for keeping sets together is placing the entire sheet set inside one of its pillowcases.
Use Baskets, Bins and Totes
Storing smaller items in totes just makes sense. They keep items together, making them easy to find. Consider labeled baskets for your toiletries and one for washcloths.
Clean Twice a Year
Remove everything from your linen closet twice a year. This not only allows you to thoroughly clean the space, but it also serves as a reminder of what’s inside. If you’ve stored a blanket for years and it never gets used, you might realize it’s time to let it go. The same goes for threadbare towels and stained wash cloths. It’s an opportunity to see what needs to be replaced so things are fresh for you, your family and your guests.
